4 things I am looking forward to this weekend aside from Patriots/Dolphins

November 21st, 2008

Jack and Chloe will be watching 24 Sunday, will you?

Jack and Chloe will be watching 24 Sunday, will you?

Jack Bauer comes back into my life.

It has been too long without Jack, Chloe, Tony and the whole CTU. The last season of 24 was a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean it has jumped the shark. Chach has viewed an advanced copy and he said the 2 hour even this Sunday at 8p is very good: This coming from a non-24-fan. Jack and Chloe are 2 of the greatest characters in television history and I can’t wait to see who they will introduce as new characters this season (i.e. Lynn McGill, Ryan Chapell, Edgar Stiles).

Harvard/Yale

Dino and Gerry made fun of me this morning for going to “The Game” Saturday afternoon, but I’m excited. Harvard Stadium is a great venue and this is one of the most historic games in college football. Is this a better game then Ohio State/Michigan or Florida/Florida State or South Carolina/Clemson? Of course not. But it’s on my Sports Bucket List and I will be able to cross it off when Michael Lawler leads the Crimson over Yale in the 125th version of this great rivalry.

Texas Tech/Oklahoma

Heisman Trophy. Trip to Big 12 Championship. Number 1 ranking. All three of these are on the line Saturday night in Norman as these two programs take the field just after 8p. How can you not root for Texas Tech? They have been such a great story this season and the most exciting team to watch over the last 5 years. Mike Leach can name his job and price if he takes a school from Lubbock, Texas to the national championship.

Who is next on Beacon Hill

Diane Wilkerson, now Chuck Turner, who is next? Business on Beacon Hill has never been clean, but this is getting ugly. It is pretty evident that Wilkerson flipped on Turner. Who else has she ratted on and who will Turner turn in to save his behind? I don’t believe these 2 are the only Massachusetts Pols that are dirty, but I am beginning to get the feeling that we are in for a once in a lifetime scandal involving politicians in this state.

Enjoy the weekend - only 3 more work days until Thanksgiving……send any emails or comments to imeropol@weei.com

Posey Hoping for Celtics-Hornets Finals

November 20th, 2008

Posey would love to take this back from the Celtics

Posey would love to take this back from the Celtics

James Posey has been watching the Boston Celtics from afar this season but hopes to see them up close in June. In a recent interview with HOOPSWORLD, Posey admits to keeping tabs on his former teammates now that he is playing for the New Orleans Hornets.

“Yeah, I check them out. They are the defending champs. They are the champs until someone beats them,” Posey said, adding, “That’s what I told them – me versus them in the Finals. That would be a nice ending to the season.”

The veteran sixth man is averaging 9.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in nearly 30 minutes a game for the Hornets. His shooting has also jumped to 48.5% from the field and 44.7% from long-range.

The Hornets are 5-5 and will take on the Celtics December 12 in Boston and February 11 in New Orleans. Safe to say there’ll be no hugs before those games.

College Football Playoff — It Makes Too Much Sense

November 18th, 2008

Tim Tebow needs to be involved in an 8 Team Playoff

Tim Tebow needs to be involved in an 8 Team Playoff

Another great college football season will end with, what if? College football is the greatest regular season with the worst post season. With the new BCS formula there is essentially a 2 team playoff. The top 2 teams in the BCS are guaranteed to play in the Nation Championship. It is better then what we have had in the past, but still not good enough.

ESPN and the BCS have agreed to a deal that will keep college football from having a playoff until at least 2014. The only reason for the BCS is money. Anyone who argues against a playoff is going to lose. Football players miss zero classes all year, aside from 1 Thursday night game a team might play. There are 12 games in a season, college football and hockey teams play over 30. The season last 3 months (September-November), College Basketball season lasts 5 months (November-March).
The answer to the problem is simple: an 8 team playoff.

Here is the format.

The BCS stays - it is used to decide the top 8 teams that will play off. Don’t give me the argument, “what about the 9th team?” That argument doesn’t hold water. People argue about the 65th and 66th team in the NCAA Tournament. Would you rather feel for the 9th ranked team that missed out or the 3rd ranked team that missed out. This also keeps the regular season relevant. The college basketball season is not as exciting or meaningful as college football’s. This will remain the same, as more then 2 loses will probably eliminate a team from the playoff.

All games are played at the home stadium except for the Nation Championship Game. You can’t ask fans to travel to bowl sites for 3 straight weeks. And here is the best part……We keep the bowls. Why keep the bowls now that we have a playoff? I’m glad you asked that question. Right now only one bowl matters, that is the BCS Championship Game. All the other bowls are just for the teams and their fans. I’m a fan of South Carolina. They are most likely going to play in the Outback or Peach Bowl (it will always be the Peach Bowl to me). This game means nothing in the race for the National Championship, but it is an extra game for me and my fellow Gamecock Fans. Plus it is an excuse to go away for New Years to a place I would not normally go. Nothing against Tampa or Atlanta, but I’m not ringing in 2009 in these cities unless my team is Bowling there.

That is it. End of discussion. There is nothing hard about this. It works. But alas, we have to wait for at least 5 more years before we see this happen.

In case you are against a playoff….here is the Opening Round if the season ended today.

Penn State @ Alabama
Utah @ Texas Tech
Southern Cal @ Texas
Oklahoma @ Florida

This would be the greatest weekend in the history of College Football. But it makes too much sense.

FSU, I got your tomahawk chop right here

November 15th, 2008

Posted by Steve Ciaccio

Game Day:

BC FSU 8 pm kickoff tonight at Doak S. Campbell Stadium.  It will be a black out, as FSU will wear black shirts and pants, and encourage fans attending to wear black as well.  Since we are already at the stadium, I know a bit early for an 8pm kickoff, but we have to go when the early bus leaves.  I thought I would bring you a few images of what we do when there are late games:  First off, you have to know Meterparels eating habits.  The greaser the food the better.  One of his favorite stops is Steak-N-Shake, so we took off for lunch at noon headed for, you guessed it SNS.  To the left Meter is enjoying a Frisco melt, Jayme Parker got the same thing (her first ever trip to SNS), I had the Portobello Mushroom and Swiss burger.  As we left Jparker put a cool lid on Meterparel, for a guy that doesn’t like to wear hats it took him a while to remove this one!  You get a free bowl of soup with that hat?  Oh it looks good on you!

Tonight’s game will be a big test for the BC offensive linemen, not only will they have the crowd noise(another picture on that to follow), but they will have to deal with Everette Brown, a 6 foot 4 inch pass rushing machine with 9 sacks this year.  Chris Crane needs to not lose the game for the eagles.  What I mean by that is, don’t make any mistakes (see Quinton Porter in the first ACC game at the Heights-first pass was a pick 6), don’t try to force things, or this defense will kill you.

Bus ride in there are already Noles fans tailgating, think they'll make it to kickoff?

A small note that may only interest me (did I just sound like Peter King right

Meterparel and Jayme Parker on the field about 2pm!

there) and Big Game James.  Ron Simmons will be on the sidelines tonight to enjoy a game at the Doak.  Simmons a former FSU linebacker in the 70’s and WWE superstar.  There is a good article in NoleSports.com about him and his love for FSU.  I told Jayme she has to interview Ron if he is there so give a listen tonight.  Don’t forget the game is on AM 680 due to celts conflict.
