Welcome Curt
Posted by Rob Bradford
So we’re sitting down back in August, Tim Murphy and I, making a ‘wish list’ of contributors for our new venture. To be honest, the list wasn’t that long in my mind. Big names weren’t hard to identify, but finding big names who were going to deliver big things when it came to the written word on a consistent basis was another sort of task, entirely.
Before we could even put pen to paper to kick off the roll call, one name was thrown out.
“Curt Schilling!”
For our purposes, the name made all the sense in the world. I made the argument that very, very, very few people could do what Curt could do, which was supply the kind of voice that was powerful enough to reverberate through the internet equally on both the local and national levels. He had already proven his ability to do so thanks to his blog, 38Pitches.com, and wasn’t about to lose the kind of passion that made his stuff — no matter the subject — a must-read.
So in the spirit of ‘you will never know unless you ask’, we asked. We weren’t alone. Our wish list wasn’t the only one with Curt placed at the forefront. National. Local. You name it. To Curt’s credit, he had built such a unique product in regards to his blog that a myriad of Web sites were standing in line hoping to invite 38 Pitches aboard.
Our hope was that Curt would see the same potential that brought us all to WEEI.com. Fortunately, he did.
This past week, in his 38 Studios office, Curt officially agreed to join our team. He will write columns and blogs every week, participate in video blogs, and schedule live, interactive in-game blogs during the season, while also appearing on the WEEI Radio Network each week, including an in-studio spot once a month.
You’ve already gotten a sample of what Curt can do over Thanksgiving thanks to his two-part series on the five-year anniversary of his courtship by the Red Sox. And this week he will be shipping along entries while on tour to support our troops in Kuwait.
As for whether or not part of Curt’s immediate blogging future will include documenting a return to the pitching mound, I can’t help you there. You’ll just have to log on every other minute to find out.
Welcome Curt.

BRAVO! Great ove.

Can we have back our $8Million for 2008 that we paid you to sit at home doing nothing but eating chinese food buffets; lobbying to remove your weight clause and throwing teammates under the bus; even the one’s gone who weren’t there to speak to their face?
Oh….and welcome Curt.

Biggest Loud-Mouth Thief in Red Sox Franchise History - $8 Million to sit at home in 2008; how about a refund check, fatty ??
Doesn’t tell anyone his arm hurts until 5 days before Spring Training….
Schilling you are as joke.

Kevin, bitterness is so sad. Guy is a major reason the Sox have two World Championships this decade and his blog is a fascinating read for any baseball fan.
Stop acting like a spoiled baby. It’s quite unattractive.

Cyn:
He is a major reason we Won 2004.
2007 he spent 75% of the Season on the DL while whining he was going topitch for another team in 2008 because The Red Sox were harping on his weight issues.
We throw him a 2008 $8Million contract and he can’t pull his head up from the “All-You-Can-Eat” long enough to tell the team his arm hurts until 5 days before Spring Training.
Them, while out ALL 2008 taking the $8 Million from us…. he starts throwing his team under the bus.
He should’ve retired after ‘04….and gone out on top.
He’s a loud-mouth.
If that truth hurts, I frankly don’t care about being attractive to you.
Kevin

Kevin why did you refer to the Red Sox paying Curt as “we”. Don’t be a moron and say that you are a fan and pay his salary by going to games, that is an absurd arguement. Curt is a thief for bringing a World Series to Boston? If anything they should pay him more than 8$ million for everything he brought to this city. You say Curt is still living off the glory of 2004 and you are inferring he has to let 2004 go, but Red Sox fans before 2004 only would drown their sorrows in story after story of disappointments over the past 86 years prior to 2004. So it is ok for negativity to reverberate regarding the sox for 86 years, but 4 years after the world series victory is to long to be positive, just proves that you like negativity and would not be happy unless the sox win the world series every year. I am sure you are to stupid to understand the economics of his prescence in Boston anyway. If Curt is a loudmouth, then what are you?

Hey Cyn -
Manny Ramirez was a “major reason” for 2 World Championships as well….
By your attractivenesss scale; I would have to understand you want to read his blogs too??

I tell the truth.
As unpopular as it is.
Curt Schilling should get all the praise in the world for 2004; and “NO” definately not foget it or let it go…. but his “demands” on The Red Sox have no foundations other than his 2004 run.
‘07 was a mess for him and ‘08 even he proclaimed a “nightmare of personal uselessness” on WEEI.
When a guy is proclaiming himself the biggest impact player of The Red Sox Franchise; while saying he wants to pitch for other teams in the middle of the ‘07 season run….same standard you want to use on Manny…. he’s a whiner !!
“We” paid him because as a TRUE FAN — (not a pink-hat like you are) I can inlcude myself in feeling like The Red Sox were robbed of $8 Million last year.
Schilling was for The Red Sox what Roger Clemens was for The Yankees in 2007.
….And yes, when ticket brokers buy up all the tickets and resell them for $400 a seat; I do pay his salary !!!!
Kevin

Schilling should’ve donated his $8 Million 2008 roberry money to the Jimmy Fund.

Wow. Tough room today.
You can’t please all of the people all of the time, seemingly.
Kevin, I think everyone - including Curt - was dissapointed in his not being able to play this past year. It’s just a game - and you don’t pay the payroll, so how’s about easing up a bit? It’s over and done with. JMHO….
While I will miss the original blog - it’s good to know that the insight isn’t gone forever. Looking forward to it….
Thanks for bringing him onboard Rob!

“And yes, when ticket brokers buy up all the tickets and resell them for $400 a seat; I do pay his salary !!!!”
Does that make any sense at all? Does Schilling own the ticket brokers??
John C

2+2=4 everyday buddy.
Schilling doesn’t own ticket-brockers but when “you” and fans alike “pay for” tickets the money goes to The Red Sox; who in turn pay their athletes.
Welcome to The World -

How many Red Sox Games can you afford to go to?
I go to about 20 a year at $200-$400 per ticket (always 2 tickets a game).
If I spend between $4,000 & $8,000 a year going to 20 Red Sox Games — that money goes where? To the Red Sox. What do the Red Sox do with it? They pay their athletes, amongst other things.
I worship at the feet of the 2004 Red Sox more than any other year. I don’t even “Boo” Johnny Damon when he returns in PinStripes — BUT when a guy is a loud-mouth blowhard 24-7 and throws his own teammates under the bus; including one’s who aren’t even there to speak to their faces…. and didn’t tell The Red Sox until 5 days before Spring Training 2008 that his arm hurt him the whole offseason…. it disgusts me. My money went to this ??
(A) Professional athlete; (B) bloated whiner?
It’s “B”….
In 2007; Schilling showed up 30lbs overweight to Spring Training and when questioned he said, “Don’t worry I’ll pitch my way into shape.” Then Day 1 of ST he demands a 2008 contract. DAY 1 !!
How about “get in shape” ??
Then with 75% of 2007 on the DL; and not even close to the Schilling of 2004….he whines out-loud he’d like to pitch for Tampa Bay in 2008; (in essence saying to The Red Sox; I want my ‘08 contract).
How about focus on the 2007 Season where we ran to AL East Championship down to the wire with the Yankees.
In PostSeason he Lost Game 2 of the ALCS and only won other games because of run support; not great pitching.
Now, Schilling thinks he holds Boston in his hands….
My point all day is “Thank You for 2004 Curt…. now stop taking advantage of fans & The Red Sox….” — 2008 was a nightmare and we wasted $8Million and he should donate it all to the Jimmy Fund if he is so “disappointed in himself” as he wants us to believe. Keep what you eanred, Curt….donate the 2008 money you sat home collecting.

Hi Kevin,
I don’t go to THAT many games - unfortunately, time doesn’t allow for that, I wish I could! But, when I DO go, I don’t pay nearly that much. I also don’t buy them from scalpers either, so maybe that’s the difference. I buy them face value, or maybe a bit above - and I’m sort of a ticket snob, I like really good seats so I don’t mind paying more.
At the same time - tickets don’t go up because of one player. They go up because every organization in all sports raise their ticket prices — esp. if they’ve been successful the year previous.
I’m not here to defend Curt Schilling to you; there are some players that not everyone likes - I’ve been known to dislike some that others love myself.
All I’m saying is that it’s not HIS fault that the prices have gone up. Nor do I feel that he comes across as if he “owns” Boston. I think that most athletes - including Curt - donate alot of their time and money to charities, and have to constantly deal with people (not trying to throw stones here) thinking their entitled to a piece of them, good bad or otherwise.
Personally, I think there are other players that the organization has given money to who have sorely underperformed - and again, it’s not so much their fault as it is the fault of the organizations who choose to pay insane amounts of money to ball players.
You and I may have to agree to disagree on this one Kevin. I enjoy the insight that Curt provides on the sport, and the innerworkings of Major League Baseball whether he plays again or not.
And you always have the option, not to read….right?

I have a great deal of respect for what you are saying….not everyone loves the same players. But you are missing my point.
I’m not saying Curt Schilling alone drove-up prices. What I am saying is that; as the most expensive ticket in baseball today (Boston); when you and I and other Red Sox Fans pay the prices; (I don’t buy off scalpers but Stub-Hub or Ace Tickets); I buy great seats right on the field as well. At $200-$400 a ticket…. the price tickets are sold for at these secondary agencies who buy them all up after season ticket holding PINK-HATS….my point is “our money” for tickets goes to The Red Sox to pay all their athletes and other expenses….And my money in 2008 ($4,000-$8,000) any cent of it going to Schilling to sit home makes me nauseated. (I guess I’ll just try hard to believe none of my spent-money went to him; but helped with other salaries and expenses.)
He should donate “ALL of it” to the Jimmy Fund.
I will not read a sentence of his garbage he blogs; as I have not ever even visited 38pitches.com and won’t.
I am disgusted with a man who will lie to the faces of ownership and fans….then spin it and say “I’m disgusted with myself that I’m home doing nothing for the team and getting paid.”
“Really Curt…. cuz so are we. So donate that unearned money to the Jimmy Fund and we can all feel better about it”.
We can agree to disagree: I clearly don’t have an issue with anything you feel. I am just sick and tired of everyone bowing before Schilling when we have a double-standard in place for this guy who LIED to the team.

There is one guy in this forum being negative.

And, Kevin, maybe things would be different if people actually believed he lied to the team. Most of us don’t. And you have nothing to prove that he did.

As a fan, I could not care on little bit about how much my favorite baseball team spends to put the team on the field. Sure, I use the amount the Yankees pay their players but that was because we wanted what they had. A WORLD SERIES.
For Curt, I am one of those guys who was hoping that the deal would be done and would be thankful if it ever happened.
We won the series, in dramatic fashion. We vanquished our hated (but worthy) rivals and took the trophy home that many felt we had lost the year before. Curt was a HUGE (No pun intended) reason for this. I wasnt throwing Foulkie under the bus after his arm turned to Jello following the 2004 run. We are fans, not GM’s. Sure if you want to be a prognosticator, go ahead and complain about the money involved. However, the only person who should be complaining about return on investment is Theo. Lets be frank about this. If this dude could pitch last year, he would have. Lets be thankful for what he and the rest of the Redsox have done for us. Giving us 2 World Series and changed the face of Boston Sports for a long time to come.

I totally respect everythign you wrote and I agree with 99% of it.
The only difference is Keith Foulke didn’t “LIE” to The Red Sox and whine and moan about his 2008 contract when he was already overweight and under-the-scope in 2007 and speaking out about wanting to pitch elsewhere in the middle of a season in which we were headed for our 2nd WS Run.
Schilling & Foulke are a bad comparison.
I will forever be grateful to the 2004 Red Sox; honestly even more than 2007 !! But as a fan; I most certainly can be disgusted by one man’s actions; much like people loathed Manny Ramirez in 2008 (and I didn’t.)
If you are OK with Schilling; by theory you must be OK with Manny. There is no differences. And as fans we do habve the right to voice our disdain.
Don’t get me wrong - I am all for spending big-m,oeny for stars. I want to see The Red Sox as Champions…. but coming out of 2004 and into 2007; I didn’t like The Curt Schilling that was publicly-speaking and disregarding his physical and mental commitments to The Red Sox. Theo Epstein can be mad about return-on-investment…. but so can “the fans”.
We pay enough to go….

I don’t get why anyone’s dislike of Schilling should get in the way of the simple truth. After a shaky ‘07 season that saw Schilling get shut down because of a a “tired” shoulder, he then went on to post a postseason record of 3-0 including the ALDS clincher and decisive Game 6 win in the ALCS along with winning Game 2 of the World Series. He signed his ‘08 extension with Boston in early Nov.’07 reportedly passing all physical exams including X-rays, MRI’s, the works! He then reportedly notified the Sox brass in early Jan’08 that after an extended off season rest, he was experiencing soreness in his early throwing sessions in late Dec. ‘07. It became public in early Feb. ‘08 and the Sox finally placed Schilling on the 60 day DL in mid-March ‘08. Now someone please tell me…how did he misrepresent his condition and cheat the team and the fans? That has to be the single most idiotic theory that I’ve ever come across anywhere!

I’ll tell you how it’s misrepresenting his condition. He was under a contractual obligation to advise the team of his health and conditioning. he did not advise The Team until 5 days before Spring Training that he had soreness and pain in his offseason “limited” throwing sessions. The Team then had to either allow him surgery and shutdown for the Season paying him $8 Million for nothing — or — try and rehab the arm.
The decision was left to Schilling.
Schilling chose; “I can rehab my arm….” (Mind you if he chose surgery it would have nullified his contract and The Red Sox would not have had to pay him $8 Million to sit at home).
He has a weak rehab; so bad that openyl even Theo Epstein stated, “You can have a pass with your kid in the front yard; it doesn’t mean you have progress.”
He finally tunrs out rehab; having blissfully failed and gets surgery. ow, having taking the steps to “rehab” he stays under paid-contract for $8 Million that he whined about all 2007 while sitting on the DL for 2/3rd’s of the year.
That is lying to the Team (OffSeason) & Fans (During the Season “I can rehab my arm; it feels strong….”)
He wanted his $8 Million and sit home….
It’s a gross misconduct of a 2004 HERO !!!!

He may have a big mouth BUT Schilling backed it up in spades when it counted!
The Red Sox and Theo gambled on what they knew which was even though all the tests were negative in terms of no obvious damage, there are only so many pitches left in Schilling’s shoulder/arm anyway! Just take a look at the Mets and how much they gave to Pedro for 4 years. The Mets barely received half of a return on their investment! Now Pedro Martinez is a mere shade of himself and has to learn how to adjust to barely breaking 90 MPH…it happens!

Pedro & Curt Schilling ??
That’s the worst comparison in HISTORY -
Pedro is still pitching competitavely and (admittedly overcome injuries) but Schilling’s big-mouth hasn’t been backed up by crap.
2004 he was GOD — No Debate !!
2007 he was a whinebag loudmouth; professing his demands upon the Red Sox; and bitching that he’d be glad to pitch somehwere else.
Keep in mind his PostSeason in 2007 was “NOT” Schilling masterpieces; it was offense carrying it’s pitcher. He would’ve been Game 2 ALCS Loser if we hadn’t overcome and gone extra inninings; (only to see Eric Gag-Me blow that too….)
My point is 2008 was a miserable lie-based infusion of wasted money on a wasted arm of a wasted big-mouth !!!!
He should donate the full $8Million to the Jimmy Fund and then shut-up !!

Kevin…it’s time to revise your false facts!…go back and do some serious reading,it’s all there!…Schilling informed the Red Sox in JANUARY that he had experienced recurring shoulder pain in his workouts! He was examined by THEIR doctor and was allowed to seek an opinion from HIS doctor at the end of January! It all went public a week before Spring Training approx Feb 7-8, that’s it!
A third doctor’s opinion was sought as per the collective bargaining agreement and he sided with the team’s doctors rehab theory! Schilling agreed and went with the concensus. Schilling was bound to abide by the majority decision and was persuaded to do so with the hope that they were right and he could return as soon as they had summized! What choice did he really have anyway?… and PLEASE get off your high horse stating he should have forfeited his salary and just had the surgery! That’s plain foolish! When he was still experiencing pain by the 3rd week in June it was decided that the rehab had failed and the surgery was scheduled! What’s so underhanded in all of that? Most athletes would rather avoid surgery for rehab any day!

…cut the bull Kevin!…as good as Pedro was here, Schilling gave the team the shot in the rear it needed to get to and win 2 World Series Championships!…LOL!…Pedro the ultimate whiny azz DIVA who claimed he was “disrespected” by the Red Sox AFTER they picked up his $17.5M ‘04 option 6 months early, BEFORE the start of the ‘03 season, and then had the BALLS to say the very next day he was “disrespected” by Boston because they also should have extended his contract AND NOW wouldn’t entertain re-signing with Boston because of that!…the Pedro that couldn’t understand why the Red Sox FO wanted to wait a few months into the ‘03 season to see how his shoulder reacted…my god, how dare they exercise caution after “disrespecting” Pedro @ $75M/6 YRS prior to that?!
… yah the same Pedro who had legitimate shoulder issues and concerns that turned the Red Sox off from wanting to offer any more than 2 years as a FA, NOT FOUR and whose shoulder issues ultimately shut him down 2/3 of the way through his 2nd Mets season causing him to miss most of the 3rd season and had him come back as nothing short of a junkball batting practice pitcher # 4/5 starting pitcher in ‘08!

Methinks you’re going to be quite disappointed in the lack of “buzz” Schilling generates for you after the initial curiosity wears off. Most folks don’t like Schill and don’t care what he thinks about much of anything, If what Schill has contributed so far (mostly self serving blather - jeez it’s so unlike Schill heh heh heh) is any indication of what lies ahead then Curt’s offerings will mirror 95% of this site, i.e. meaningless homey softball drivel lacking any “must read” content.
This site is a major disappointment. So much potential but so little mojo.

The Curt Schilling statements I have revisited and he is a LIAR !!!!
The Pedro comments were my own personal feelings; not fact-based stat vs stat with fatty Schilling. If there is such animosity with Boston; then why did The Red Sox provide a video tribute to Pedro Martinez and tell him “Fenway Park is Always Your Home” in InterLeague Play 2006 ?? Pedro (in Mets Uniform says) “this is my home; no matter what I am wearing”….
Yeah, sounds like a lot of bull and animosity there.
