Dustin Pedroia’s ALDS struggles

This will come to no surprise to anyone but Dustin Pedroia is having a dreadful American League Division Series. Through the first three games he hasn’t had a single base hit which is shocking considering he was tied with Ichiro Suzuki for the most hits in the majors in 2008 with 213 hits. To put that number in perspective the next name on the list was Jose Lopez who had 191 hits, which is 22 less than Pedroia and Suzuki.

What’s somewhat concerning is that we are beginning to see a trend with Pedroia and the ALDS. Sure it’s a small sample size - 6 games - but for everyone who was pushing for the second baseman to win the MVP (myself included) you’d like for him to come up big in this series against the Angels. Just to document the numbers (what’s better than a post with statistics on Behind the Glass?) here are Pedroia’s stats from the 2007 and 2008 ALDS against the Angels:

G AB R H 2B RBI BB SO HBP SF BA OBP SLG
2007 3 13 2 2  2 1 1 2 0 0 .154 .214 .308
2008 3 13 0 0  0 0 2 2 1 0 .000 .188 .000
Total 6 26 2 2  2 1 3 4 1 0 .077 .200 .154

The numbers speak for themselves and they’re not good. Perhaps the whole point of this post is to pull a Bill Simmons-esqe reverse jinx and get Pedroia’s bat going in time for tonight’s big Game 4. Reverse jinx or not, the Red Sox need Pedroia’s bat to spark the entire offense and Boston fans should hope things turn around fast.
