Wednesday Spotfest Survivor Series Preview!
Posted by James Stewart
On Sunday Night the WWE returns to the TD Banknorth Garden for the 22nd edition of the Survivor Series. The Pay Per View was created back in 1987 as a way for the WWF to have Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant compete in the same match without the WWF Heavyweight Championship on the line. In the early years of the event the matches were all tag team 5 on 5 or 4 on 4 elimination format.
This will mark the second time the Survivor Series will be held in Boston. The 1993 event was headlined by a 4 on 4 Survivor style match captained by Lex Luger and Yokozuna. It also marked the beginning of the Owen Hart/Bret Hart feud.
This years event will also complete the Big 5 for WWF(E) Pay Per View held in the TD Banknorth Garden. They’ve prevouisly hosted Wrestlemaina 14, King of the Ring 2000, Royal Rumble 2003 and Summer Slam 2006.
The card for the Thanksgiving Tradition is built around Chris Jericho’s defense of the Raw Title against the returning John Cena. Cena’s neck was injured a few month back in the ring. This will be Cena’s second crack at trying to win a World Championship in his hometown of Boston. Jericho on the other hand is looking at adding John Cena to an impressive list of wrestlers he has beaten in big money matches. Look for Cena to come out on top, with a build toward Batista-Cena 2 at Wrestlemania in Houston, TX.
The Smackdown Championship right now is a one on one battle between Champion, Triple H and the undefeated challenger, Vladmir Kozlov. The wild card might be Jeff Hardy, who if he wins his Smackdown match on Friday Night against Triple H, he will be added to the match, making it a Triple Threat. If Cena is going to regain the Raw Championship, I don’t think the WWE is going to have Hardy or the “Moscow Maller” come out with the title belt.
The Undertaker will take on the Big Show in a Casket Match, where the winner will be the man who can place his opponent inside of the ringside casket and close the lid. This will mark the third pay per view in a row these two have tangled. This will be their rubber match. The Casket match itself was created by the Undertaker and first put on display at the 1994 Survivor Series in Texas. This is one of Takers marque matches, recording 8 victories in 13 matches of this type. This will be the Big Show’s first career. It’s interesting to see if this feud will end with this match or continue forward. Taker and Show could make valid arguments to be moved up to a main event program with Triple H, or whomever leaves Survivor Series with the Heavyweight Championship.
The other two matches currently listed on WWE’s website are 5 on 5 Survivor Series Elimination match ups. One is Team Michaels (Rey Mysterio, The Great Khali and Cryme Tyme)Â v Team JBL (Kane, MVP, The Miz & John Morrison). The other features Team Batista (R-Truth, ECW Champion Matt Hardy and World Tag Team Champions CM Punk & Kofi Kingston)Â against Team Orton (Cody Rhodes, Intercontinental Champion William Regal, United States Champion Shelton Benjamin and Mark Henry).
The event will be a fun three hour night of sports entertainment wrestling. Hope to see you there!
